[character] 东 (1)

Athena's Chinese Class

[character] 东

“东(dōng)” originally meant a type of bag for travel (囊蠹, nángdù), bundled up onto a stick on both ends and in the middle. This is what the oracle bone inscription illustrates. Due to the same pronunciation between the bag for travel and the direction where sun raises, “东” was borrowed to mean east as well. After thousands of years, “东” lost its original meaning of the bag for travel, but only the meaning of east left. (The original work is exhibited at “Chinese Charming” salon.)
